The light is unbending, but our bodies block it’s onward march, casting new shadowed meaning. In shadows and light there is seductive ideology of all kinds, with potential dangers. The polemics of light and dark as opposing forces and as metaphors for good and evil is one of the oldest motifs, but it still has us gripped. In waking consciousness the human mind is naturally dualistic, and as such cannot wholly comprehend the idea of a total union between two seemingly disparate sides, of good and evil, light and dark, one and another. For me chiaroscuro embodies our complex relations to these attractive opposites.
