[Matthew Stone]

We have approached this work with interconnection rather than cultural difference in mind. Whilst individual contemporary cultural ideas exist about the body and its representation, the physical bodily experience of our immersive performance for an audience within a functioning hammam is abstract and as yet undefined. We aren’t consciously remixing Morrocan culture, but beggining a genuine experiment within an exciting and unique context, both architecturally and environmentally. In the conversations we have had with Morrocans, we found that they drew conceptual parralels between our intentions for the performance and aspects of Sufi mysticism. I think we’d find something of our intention in every culture. The structure of the sound we are producing for the performance draws on what are essentially archaic ecstasy techniques, except we have replaced shamanic drum patterns with computer generated electronic tones.
