Located in a basement without windows in London East End and similar to an isolation cell, the Island is the studio of the artist Daniele Geminiani, who develops exhibition projects as part of his art practice. Since 2009 the studio has presented works by established artists such as Dan Graham, systematically linked to collaborative projects, thus defining a space devoted to research. After Radical Relations, which was a series of three shows resuming the nature of Robert Vincent project (started in Zurich in 2004), The Island is currently developing 24 Month Meditation, a nomadic biennial which runs in a period of two years dedicated to meditation and states of trance.

In shadows and light there is seductive ideology of all kinds, with potential dangers. The polemics of light and dark as opposing forces and as metaphors for good and evil is one of the oldest motifs, but it still has us gripped. In waking consciousness the human mind is naturally dualistic, and as such cannot wholly comprehend the idea of a total union between two seemingly disparate sides, of good and evil, light and dark, one and another. For me chiaroscuro embodies our complex relations to these attractive opposites.

Recently I have been working on a series of projections for my friend Theo Adams. This next weekend will see the European debut of his show ‘Cry Out’. I found this still from a film we made together in 2007. It looks like he is dissolving!

MATTHEW STONE PRESENTS ‘HARD FUTURE’ - FRIDAY 21 MAY
Featuring:

The Theo Adams Company,
Alex Nikiporenko,
Pandora’s Jukebox,
Chris Flatline (ENDURANCE),
Pony-Girl (ENDURANCE),
LVR (ENDURANCE)
& Matthew Stone

HARD FUTURE is a curated evening of collaborative performance, projections, and classical/electronic body music.

Alex Nikiporenko & Matthew Stone will be presenting a collaborative musical performance. Born and raised in Moscow, Nikiporenko began composing at the age of 7, realising his true passion while studying at Moscow Conservatory’s Junior Department, moving to England at 13, reaching high acclaim as BBC/Guardian Young Composer of the Year in 2008, and last year held the position of Creative in Residence of The Hospital Club in London.

Theo Adams / The Theo Adams Company will present new work stemming from his large-scale multi-disciplinary theatrical production “CRY OUT”, which recently premiered in Tokyo, including visuals and projections directed by Matthew Stone. A self-taught, 20 year old director, performer and visionary, Adams recently featured in an epic portfolio shot by David Sims for W Magazine, which said: “Theo Adams and his posse of dancers, musicians and muses has taken London’s avant-garde by storm.”

Pandora’s Jukebox is Yasmina Dexter who will present an exclusive DJ set. Originally from Slovenia, this striking, London based polymath is known for her sexy and distinctive DJ sets, intricate catwalk soundscapes for designers such as Preen and Christopher Kane, and her iconic style, a muse to shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood. Pandora’s Jukebox crafts her mixes for the catwalk and the dancefloor, hovering somewhere between the seedy sensuality of a Soho strip show and the masked ball scene in ‘Eyes Wide Shut’.

ENDURANCE is the brainchild of producer and DJ Chris Flatline. ENDURANCE will be providing an expert selection of Electronic Body Music, New Beat and Aggrepo for the latter half of the night. Chris Flatline will be joined by his resident DJ’s Pony-Girl & LVR. Endurance has fast become London’s most interesting new club night. Compared by Vice’s Online Fashion Editor Daryoush Haj-Najafi to an early Nag Nag Nag, ENDURANCE rides the crest of the newest wave of cold, hard and industrial beats set to redefine London’s club-scene. ENDURANCE recently joined forces with London cult club-legends Cosey to host a room at the ICA.
